At the age of 29, Kayla was diagnosed with Soft Tissue Sarcoma in October, 2009. Kayla and her crew fought hard and after treatment, Kayla was told in the spring of 2010 that her cancer was gone!  During a checkup in December of 2012, they found that the cancer had returned to her hip. They successfully removed the tumor the following month, however, that summer they discovered the cancer had metastasized to her lungs. The cancer was caught quick enough that they were able to remove the tumors without compromising her functional lung capacity. She fully recovered from the surgery and Kayla’s Crew celebrated their third triumph over cancer.

That update on Kayla’s health was short lived as the best news they had ever received, because in January 2014, Joe and Kayla found out they were going to have a baby. Kayla understood that the surgeries and chemotherapy presented an additional risk in getting pregnant, but starting a family was a priority and as usual, Kayla put her individual concerns aside.

On September 12, 2014, at 10:12 PM weighing 7lbs. 4 oz. Kendall Grace Hebenstreit was born. Kendall has indeed been a miracle to the family, but on Monday, October 13th, 2014 Kayla and Joe found out they were in need of another miracle. Kayla’s most recent scans showed the cancer had returned to her hip and again, metastasized to her lungs. This time was different though. Because of the increased number of tumors, and the area affected, the doctors told them that the cancer was inoperable. The doctors told them they had “about a year” and there wasn’t much they could do.

Kayla and Joe, along with all of their family and friends, were devastated with the news. Joe and Kayla decided once again that giving up wasn’t an option and never would be. They have begun chemotherapy again to try and shrink the tumors and delay the spread until they can figure out their next steps. They have spent countless hours gathering information and seeking other opinions in an effort to narrow down other research centers available for treatment options.

Joe and Kayla will have a significant increase in expenses in the months to come and we want to do everything we can to help in this fight. We want them to know they are not alone and that as a team we can all get through this. Please help in any way you can because every little bit helps. We welcome everyone to join Kayla’s Crew and help pull off one more miracle!!!

Super Jack turned two years in June, 2014.  Like any other two year old, he was full of life and in to everything!  The following month, Jack got the stomach flu.  He started vomiting almost daily for about a week.  Doctors decided to do an MRI of his head, thinking he had Meningitis. On July 15, 2014, Jack’s MRI showed a mass above his ear on the left side of his head. Later that evening, Jack had a stroke and underwent emergency surgery to remove the tumor.  They effectively removed 75% of the tumor and performed surgery again the following week to remove the rest.

They discovered that the tumor is a Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumor, called an ETANTR.  It is a very aggressive cancer with a high recurrence rate in toddlers.

Jack and his daddy, Tim, went to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in early August, 2014.  A few weeks later he was joined by his mommy, Sarah, and brand new baby brother, Jase.  He has undergone many rounds of chemotherapy and radiation.  He will return to Omaha in April, 2015 and continue chemotherapy here.

Besides the two surgeries to remove the tumors, Jack also underwent surgery to remove about ¼ of his skull bone due to contracting a staph infection called MRSA.  He now wears a helmet every day and his parents have it adorned with Super Man logos.

Jack's first round of Chemotherapy was cut short when a mid-treatment scan showed that the tumor had grown back sooner than expected.  They quickly switched treatment to six weeks of radiation and have since started chemotheraphy again.

Throughout these trials and tribulations, Jack has remained the happiest little guy on the planet.  If it weren’t for the helmet, you would NEVER know he is sick.  He is poked, prodded, sedated, scanned and tested more than most will experience in a lifetime.   He wakes up every day ready to go conquer the world.  He is non-stop and his smile can stop a heartbeat.

Along with chemotherapy in Omaha, Jack will also continue with Physical and Speech Therapy, and will need to travel back to St. Jude’s periodically for evaluations. The Speichert family is unsure what the future will hold for Super Jack, but they are going to continue the fight any way they can.  We want to support them and help give them every opportunity they need to win the war on this monster that is trying to take over their sweet little boy.
